Discover Costas Restaurant

If you’re strolling along 521 Athens St, Tarpon Springs, FL 34689, United States, it doesn’t take long to notice the steady stream of locals heading into Costas Restaurant. I’ve been there more than once-first on a friend’s recommendation during a sponge docks visit, and later because I simply couldn’t stop thinking about their grilled octopus. From the outside, it feels like a classic neighborhood diner, but once you step in, the aroma of garlic, oregano, and slow-roasted lamb instantly tells you this is a serious Greek kitchen.

On my most recent visit, I paid close attention not just to the flavors, but to how the place runs. The staff moves with that effortless rhythm you only see in family-operated spots. Orders are handwritten, plates come out fast but never rushed, and servers actually explain the specials instead of just pointing at the menu. That attention to detail matters. According to the National Restaurant Association, diners consistently rank food quality and service as the top two factors influencing repeat visits. Here, you feel both are taken seriously.

The menu leans heavily into traditional Greek cuisine while still embracing American diner favorites. You’ll find classics like moussaka, spanakopita, and chicken souvlaki alongside hearty breakfast plates and stacked sandwiches. I once brought a friend who usually avoids Mediterranean food, and she ended up raving about the gyro platter. The meat was shaved fresh from the spit, tucked into warm pita, and paired with a tangy tzatziki that tasted homemade-because it is. When I asked, the server explained that their yogurt-based sauce is prepared daily in-house using a family recipe. That kind of transparency builds trust.

Seafood is another highlight, which makes sense given Tarpon Springs’ coastal identity. The grilled octopus is tender, lightly charred, and dressed with olive oil and lemon. It’s not rubbery or overcooked, a mistake many restaurants make. Proper octopus preparation requires slow simmering before grilling, a method widely recommended by culinary professionals and seafood experts. You can tell they respect that process here. The result is balanced, clean flavor rather than heavy seasoning masking poor technique.

Breakfast deserves its own mention. Early mornings bring in a mix of retirees, families, and workers grabbing coffee before heading out. The pancakes are fluffy, the eggs cooked precisely as ordered, and the Greek omelet-loaded with feta, tomatoes, and olives-bridges diner comfort with Mediterranean flair. Coffee refills come quickly, and no one pressures you to leave. It’s the kind of setting where conversations stretch comfortably.

Reviews across multiple dining platforms consistently praise the generous portions and fair pricing. While online ratings should always be read critically, patterns in feedback often reveal reliable trends. In this case, repeated mentions of friendly service, authentic flavors, and consistency suggest a stable kitchen team and solid management. From my own visits, I can confirm that the quality has remained steady over time, which isn’t always the case with busy local spots.

Another detail worth noting is cleanliness and food safety. The dining area, restrooms, and open service counters appear well maintained. Food safety guidelines from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration emphasize proper handling of meats, dairy, and seafood, especially in high-volume restaurants. While customers can’t see everything behind the scenes, visible organization and hygienic practices inspire confidence.

Location also plays a role in its appeal. Being right on Athens Street places it close to Tarpon Springs attractions, making it convenient for tourists exploring the sponge docks. At the same time, it doesn’t feel like a tourist trap. Prices remain reasonable, and the atmosphere stays grounded in community. Locals greet each other by name, and staff remember repeat customers’ orders. That kind of familiarity can’t be manufactured.

If you’re scanning menus in the area and debating where to eat, this spot stands out for its blend of authenticity and approachability. Whether you’re craving grilled seafood, a classic gyro, or just a reliable diner breakfast, the experience feels genuine rather than gimmicky. Some restaurants rely on flashy décor or trends, but here the focus stays where it should be-on solid recipes, consistent execution, and warm service that keeps people coming back.

  • Excellent food and so much of it! Great service, and fair prices. Would definitely eat here again. I had the shrimp saganaki as a meal & there was so much shrimp I took leftovers home & had it over rice the next 2 days! My friends ordered large greek salads & they looked big enough to feed the entire table! I chose this place for friends who were visiting & everyone was very happy with their food.

  • You ever had food so good, you had to slam the silverware down? THIS place, hands (silverware) down, is the BEST damn Greek food I've ever had!! Served up by the nicest staff in a very relaxed atmosphere. If you've never been, you'll thank us later. Took wifey here for her birthday because of the ratings and she agrees wholeheartedly

  • This place has a lot of unique, traditional dishes with names I couldn’t pronounce but definitely wanted to try. Way more than just the usual gyro and hummus! I had the stuffed zucchini and loved the lemon sauce - totally unlike anything I’ve had before. It felt like real, authentic Greek home cooking. We sat out on the patio, which had a charming European vibe. It was peaceful and cozy, like we were somewhere in a little village in Greece. The service made the whole experience even better. The lady who waited on us was so warm and thoughtful—she had that kind of vibe like a mom or aunt making sure you’re taken care of. She even made sure we got the soups that came with our entrées to go, even though we originally said no because we were already kinda full from the appetizers. That little extra care really stood out. Also they have their own parking lot right next to the building. That area of Tarpon Springs can get super crowded, so it's great not having to drive in circles looking for a spot.

  • I was approached on the main street by a very kind gentleman who told me about the restaurant, and I decided to give it a try — what a great decision! We had an excellent experience. It’s a warm, family-run place with absolutely delicious food and very generous portions. The prices are amazing for what you get. I’ll definitely be visiting this city again, and this will be my go-to restaurant every time.

  • Fantastic food and service! We got the Shrimp Saganaki as an app and it was at least 3/4 pound of shrimp and flavorful with fresh tomatoes and feta. The crab stuffed flounder entree with roasted potatoes was so good with a nice size greek salad. The Greek sausage sandwich with fries was a nice portion too. Get a coupon from Pete on the corner of Dodacanese and Athens and get a free Baklava too! Attentive and friendly service was awesome.

  • The service was excellent! From the time we walked in to the time we left. Our waitress Valandou and the young hostess were very helpful and kind. The food was excellent! We will definitely come back!!!!! Thank you!!!

  • I have been to many Tarpon Springs restaurant, but was my first at Costas. I had ask for recommendation for a good restaurant. We went and everything was fantastic. We had octopus; lamb and gyro sandwiches and both were so super stuffed. The octopus was amazingly tasty and much cheaper than other restaurants in the area. Services were courteous and fast. Unlike other restaurants, Costas have their own free parking right next to the building.
